General rules for inputting Google search parameters:
To find pages with... | Do this in the search box... |
---|---|
all of the words in a series | Type the important words: tricolor rat terrier |
an exact word or phrase | Put exact words in quotes: "rat terrier" |
any of the words in a series | Type OR between all the words you want: miniature OR standard |
none of the words in a series (exclude the file with the words) | Put a minus sign just before words you don't want: -rodent, -"Jack Russell" |
numbers ranging from: nnn to: nnn | Put 2 periods between the numbers and add a unit of measure: 10..35 lb, $300..$500, 2010..2015 |
restrict a search to a series of years | For each year, precede the value with
inurl:*nnnn such as
inurl:*1964 inurl:*1965 inurl:*1966 with each year-set separated by a space. |
(There is no true date-range capability here; instead we're using a portion of the PDFs' filenames to identify the year the edition was published.) | |
If you'd prefer to build the search criteria using Google's Advanced Search facility,
> First select and Copy this search path http://cdn.manchesterhistory.org/News/ filetype:pdf pointing to the location of our scanned newspapers. > Then click > And finally Paste the search path into the "site or domain" text box on the Google Advanced Search page. | |
(Doing the Copy and Paste will restrict the Advanced Search to the Manchester Historical Society's newspapers "News" folder and ensure that only the PDFs of our newspapers are examined.) |
